Southeast Asia, specifically Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam, gets my vote. Thailand is also beautiful, but it is no longer cheap. I’m also partial to central and western China, albeit tourism infrastructure is generally inadequate in these places.

Angkor Wat, one of the world’s most stunning landmarks, is located in Cambodia. Laos offers Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with gorgeous architecture, the sluggish Mekong, and delicious food. Vietnam is home to Halong Bay, the Central Highlands, and two fantastic cities, Hanoi and Saigon.

All three nations feature a plethora of low-cost housing options where you may sleep pretty well for $15-$20 per night. If you stick to local cuisine, you’ll never pay more than $5–10 per person for supper, including beer/wine.

People are generally courteous, kind, and lovely, and the weather is always pleasant.

These locations aren’t without flaws: fraud can be a big problem if you’re not careful.

Pickpockets also target obvious tourists, and delays and other inconveniences are unavoidable.
